Text 2 考试

M: Well, I’ll go off to take my second test of the day! I can’t believe we had three yesterday!

W: Yeah. But just one more tomorrow, we will be done for the week.

Text 3 定位

W: The battery on my cell phone has died, I won’t be able to use my GPS to locate the park.

M: I will write down directions for you. It isn’t hard to find.

M: Great!

Text 5 牙疼

M: I’m feeling sick, Jenny.

W: Oh, dear. Is your tooth bothering you again?

M: Yes, I’m in terrible pain. What should I do?

Text 6 点餐

W: Hello. I’m Sadie. I’ll be taking care of you this evening.

M: Hey, Sadie. What are the specials tonight, please?

W: Well, we have fish and steak with a mushroom cream sauce.

M: Those all sound excellent. I have no idea what to choose. Perhaps you could help me decide.

W: I would go with the fish. It’s light and it just tastes so nice. I can also recommend the white wine to go with that.

M: Excellent. I will take the order and a bottle of the wine. Could I get that to go, please?

W: No problem, Sir.

Text 7 找素材

W: I didn’t think I might see you here! Are you doing research for your oral report for our American History class?

W: What are you going to talk about?

M: The American Islands in the Pacific.

W: Cool. I don’t think anyone will think of that. I don’t even know what they are.

M: Well, most people think of New York City or Texas when they think of America, not islands with different cultures.

Text 9 路边偷窃

W: I lost my wallet on my way back.

W: It was when I was in Belgium. I was on my way to the airport, and I was standing on the side of the road with my bags, trying to figure out the bus schedule. Just then, a group of guys came by and asked if they could help me. I felt really grateful at first. But what was strange was that they didn’t speak French or German to me, but spoke very broken English, and I was puzzled about what they were saying. Finally, they left, and when I looked down, I realized my wallet had disappeared.

M: Wow, they were trying to get your attention and stole from you.

W: Yeah. You’re right.

M: What was in your wallet?

W: All my money was in it. Luckily, I had put my airline ticket and my passport in my pocket. In the end I called the police.

Text 10 通知

W:Dear residents of Hidden Brook Apartments:

Please remember that beginning this Wednesday, we’ll be painting new lines to mark the parking spaces in the parking lot of our building. This means that for three days, you will be unable to park in your regular places. For other parking choices, you may park on any of the streets around our apartment building. Please note that on Thursday mornings, no cars are allowed to park on Kentucky Road because of street cleaning. Street cleaning hours are from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. You may park your cars on Delaware Avenue or New Jersey Street during this time. The painting of the parking lot will be completed by 5:00 p.m. on Friday. After this time, you are more than welcome to return your car to its regular place. We apologize for any difficulty that this may cause you, but we believe that you will be pleased with our newly painted parking lot.

听力原文

Text 1 睡觉

W: Time for bed!

M: Oh, Mom! We were having such a good time. Can’t we just watch for another while?

W: No more TV! You have to brush your teeth and go to bed. We can’t have you falling asleep in class tomorrow.

Text 2 候地铁

W: It shows that the next underground will arrive in five minutes. What’s the time now?

M: It’s five to two.

Text 3 付款

M: How much do I have to pay in all?

W: Let me see, the tie is 20 dollars, the shirt is 35 dollars and the hat is 5 dollars.

M: Sorry, but the hat isn’t mine.

Text 4 白鞋

W: I knew I shouldn’t have worn my white shoes today.

M: Why not? White goes with anything.

W: Except mud. It’s too wet for white.

Text 5 歌唱

W: Wow, you have a really great voice! Have you ever thought of being a professional singer?

M: I sing with a large church group, actually. You should come to see us sing this Saturday.

W: Oh, yeah? I’d love to!

Text 6 兄妹对话

M: Hi, Lily. Are you still at Jane’s house?

W: Yeah, why? We’re just playing some games.

M: Computer games? I’ve been looking for my notebook computer.

W: Oh, sorry. I’ve just borrowed it for the evening. Hope you don’t mind.

M: Oh. Honestly you’re always using my things without asking me, and I’ve got this really important homework project! Now what am I going to do?

W: Use Dad’s computer instead. He won’t mind.

M: Look, I can’t do that—I’ve got everything saved on mine.

Text 7 图书馆新规

M: Hey, Marrissa. You seem kind of mad.

W: I am. Have you heard about the new policy on the library books? It’s just stupid.

M: Oh, you mean the thing about having only a week for keeping borrowed books? Well, yeah... What’s wrong with it?

W: Are you serious? We can only keep books for a week? How do they expect me to read a book in a week?

M: The school’s just probably concerned about reading materials getting lost. They just want to prevent any more additional cost.

Text 8 联系亲人

W: Do you keep in touch with your aunt in America?

M: Sure, I usually call her once a month.

W: That sounds kind of expensive.

M: Yeah, a little, I guess.

W: Do you ever have the desire to chat online?

M: Sure. But my aunt is a little older and not really into using the computer.

W: You said she has kids. They must have a computer in the house. You could get one of her kids to teach her how to use the Internet.

M: Yeah, I guess I never really thought about it. I kind of like hearing the sound of her voice.

W: Yeah, I understand. I like hearing my parents’ voices too, but I don’t feel like I need to hear them every time we talk.

M: Hmm. Maybe I will get her kids to help.

Text 9 太空

W: How do you know how old a star is?

M: For most stars, we find its age from how big it is. We can know its size from the amount of light it puts out, and its color. Then the size tells us how long a star will live. Big stars live a short life while small stars live much longer.

W: I’ve always wondered if there is an end in space. Do you think scientists have found the answer?

M: This is a difficult question. The truth is that we have no idea! We currently don’t have a way of testing it. But some scientists will come up with a way in the future. I have faith in it.

W: The last question is from our readers: do you believe there’s other life in different parts of the universe?

M: There are so many planets in the universe. Life may exist on other planets. But will we ever find or research them? I think that’s very unlikely.

Text 10 请帖

W: Hello. My name is Lucy Bums, and I’m here to tell you about the welcoming party we are having for new students. The information on your invitations has mistakes. We didn’t have enough time to print new invitations, so I’ll have to ask you to make changes. To start with, this isn’t a welcoming lunch. It’s a dancing party, however, the next line is true. The party will be held at Blackwell House. The next line tells you when the party will be: Friday June 15th at 8:00 p.m., but I have good news: the party will end at 11:00 p.m. You will find there are repairs to Smith Street. Blackwell Street is very long. You should avoid the corner of Blackwell Street and Jones Avenue, because traffic jams often take place there. The best thing to do is take the first road on your left which is Brown Street. It will lead you into the college grounds, so that’s easy. I hope everyone has a great time.

听力原文

Text 1 想睡觉

W: Do you want to see another movie? I still have free tickets.

M: No, my eyes are sore. The only thing I want now is to take a nap.

Text 2 脚崴了

W: The subway entrance is at the next block. Go back. I’m fine by myself.

M: No, you just twisted your ankle. Let me get you a cab for home, please.

W: Alright. Thank you.

Text 3 诡谲的天气

W: It’s strange. At a moment I just thought it would rain heavily when I saw all those dark clouds. But the wind just blew them away in no time.

M: Yeah, and now the sun is melting me down.

Text 4 最佳喝茶时间

W: For this tea, the best time to enjoy it is 8 minutes later after you poured hot boiled water on it.

M: So you’re telling me I have to wait another 3 minutes before I can drink it?

Text 5 逮捕

W: Put your hands where I can see! Now!

M: I didn’t do anything, Officer.

W: You’re under arrest for kidnapping. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.

Text 6 往事不必再提

M: Hey, Nancy, Nancy Smith, right?

W: Yeah, and you’re…

M: I’m Jack, Jack Lane. “The Big Nose Jack”. You remember?

W: Oh, yeah. You’re Jack. Wow, it’s been so long. We haven’t met for like what? 15 years?

M: Right. How time flies! Sorry that me and “Jackie the Long-Legs” used to make fun of your red hair.

W: Never mind. We were just kids then. It’s already water under the bridge.

Text 7 不会飞的Elsa公主

M: Surprise! Come here, honey. Open it up! It’s your favorite Disney character!

W: Wow, Princess Elsa — with wings! Can she really fly?

M: Of course! All we need is to remove the lid and put the batteries in her, and press the button!

W: Nothing happens, Daddy?

M: How can it be? I did exactly what the seller told me to do. Let me see… Hmm, it says on the box that I can call their hotline for help if it doesn’t work. I’ll give it a go.

Text 8 夜店兼职

W: When I was in college, I used to work in a nightclub. I would work on the floor, just cleaning up, looking after all the drunk customers sort of thing.

M: Oh, sounds tiring.

W: Not always. My first night there was actually great. One of my favorite DJs was on and I got to listen to really good music while cleaning up after people. It was really good.

M: I heard it’s easy to find wallets dropped by careless customers in the club. Would you keep them to yourself?

W: No. People who lost their wallet with ID card and credit cards in it must be in great worry. I’d try my best to get in touch with the owner. If I can’t, I’ll just hand it to my boss.

Text 9 南非的五大兽

M: Do you know the Big Five wild animals in South Africa?

W: No. What are they?

W: What’s a cheetah?

M: It looks like a large cat with black spots on its body. It can run very fast and preys on other animals.

W: I see. A fascinating but dangerous creature.

M: Not as dangerous as a hippo. Hippos killed more people every year in the world than any other animal.

W: What?

M: Yeah. If you go out on the river in a little boat and there’s a hippo, it probably would tip your boat over and bite you in half.

Text 10 澳学生破解抗艾药

W: A drug called Daraprim has been used for 60 years for treating a life-threatening disease for pregnant women and people with HIV. It had been sold for $18 a pill by a company which held the rights to it in America before. But a businessman called Martin Shkreli bought the medicine in 2015 and immediately increased the price to $750 a pill, making it almost unaffordable.

Far across the ocean, a group of high school students at Sydney Grammar School in Australia decided to do something for the US people.

With the help of their science teachers, the students began working to recreate the drug. They posted all of their work online, which allowed scientists to provide them with guidance and feedback.

By using the materials costing only $20, the students recreated 3.7 gram chemical compound, which turned out to be the exact active ingredient for Daraprim after being tested by the University of Sydney. And that’s about $2 per pill.

Though the students can’t sell the drug in the US because Martin Shkreli still has the exclusive rights to it, they have successfully shown the world that the drug can be made much, much cheaper.
