At the end of every year, Time picks the best 25 inventions that are "making the world better and smarter". Here we have picked three of this year's inventions that could be a part of your life in the near future.

The levitating(悬浮的) light bulb

This special light bulb was invented by U.S. artist and scientist Simon Morris. He got the idea of making a light bulb float from hoverboards(悬浮滑板), which he used to dream of having as a kid.

But the floating is not the most amazing part. The rejection force between the opposite ends of the magnets(磁铁), which were put in the bottom of the bulb and in the wooden base, does the job. What's new here is a technology called induction(电磁感应). It allows the light bulb to get power from the base even they are not in contact.

Shoes that tie themselves

They're not what you think—shoelaces that tie themselves in the way we tie them. Instead, the new shoes have small motors that control their laces. When you step into them, your feet will hit a sensor(传感器) in the shoes and the motor will automatically tighten the laces.

But the shoes weren't just designed for lazy people's needs. They could actually give athletes an advantage during competition. They are also useful for people who cannot move their arms or fingers easily.

The no touch thermometer(体温计)

Taking your body temperature usually means putting a thermometer in your armpits(腋窝) and staying still for minutes. It may be easy for you, but it's an impossible task for little kids.

Now, with the new thermometer, users can simply put it 2.5 centimeters from a patient's forehead and press the button, and it can get reading in two seconds.

1.The most amazing aspect of the levitating light bulb is that ________.

A.it can float

B.its inventor is more than a scientist

C.it makes use of the rejection force between the opposite ends of the magnets

D.induction allows it to get power even when unconnected with the base

2.How is the no touch thermometer different from other ones?

A.It makes it easier to take kids' temperature.

B.You need wait two minutes for the reading.

C.You don't need to press the button.

D.It should be put in one's armpit.

3.In which part of a newspaper can you possibly read this text?

A.Education. B.Sports.

C.Science. D.Entertainment.

B

On April 14th, 2010, my entire life changed in an instant. One moment I was joyfully riding through the sunshine. The next moment, metal, flesh and bones were spreading against the pavement in a thunderous crash. Another cyclist, biking carelessly, had cut me off and sent me supermanning toward oncoming traffic.

As if to symbolize the accident that had hit my life, another disaster also occurred on April 14th, 2010. It cost the airline industry $ 1.7 billion. Ten million travelers were stuck for days. Economics all over the world were disturbed. This was the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, one of Iceland's many volcanoes.

However, volcanoes are not all bad. In fact, they are necessary. They are responsible for the birth of new earth, and for the creation of rich soil. This eruption gave off 0.15 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere daily. But cancelling 48% of the world's flight travel saved about 2.8 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, temporarily decreasing our carbon footprint.

Similarly, the accident had badly affected my emotion but it also allowed me to look more closely inside myself and discover things about myself I would never have realized. I learned how not to judge myself for my new limitations.

In 1973, another Icelandic volcano, Eldfell, broke out. Icelanders decided to bomb it with cold water until it froze and chose a different path. After their plan worked, they used the geothermal(地热的) energy for the next 15 years to heat their homes. A good example of life bringing lemons, and making lemonade! One must move on from misfortunes, focusing only on the present moment and being hopeful for the future.

I ran from April 14th, 2010, to every kind of escape. Eventually I ended up in university for a newfound love in Earth sciences.

4.What happened to the writer on April 14th, 2010?

A.He was involved in a car crash.

B.He was stuck in an Iceland's airport.

C.He witnessed a volcanic eruption.

D.He was badly injured on a bike ride.

5.Which was an effect of the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull?

A.The economy was cost globally by the eruption.

B.Carbon dioxide increased temporarily.

C.Most of the world's planes were held up.

D.The earth in Iceland was terribly polluted.

6.Why did the writer mention the Eldfell volcano?

A.It broke out in Iceland on April 14th as well.

B.It symbolized the accident that changed his life.

C.It told us to make the best of a given situation.

D.It encouraged him to know more about himself.

7.What is the best title for the passage?

A.Escape from Volcanoes

B.Inspiration from Disasters

C.Love for Earth Sciences

D.Attitude Toward Nature

Most of the sandstorms that had swept China last year came from foreign land, a Chinese official in charge of desertification (荒漠化) control said on Monday. And the invasions (入侵) could partly explain the frequent sandstorms in the country in recent years despite its achievements in desertification control.

Since the start of last spring, the north and northwestern Chinese regions had been hit by 17 sandstorms, of which, a dozen came from foreign land.

Situated in the centralAsia sandstorm region, one of the world's four largest sandstorm sources, China also suffers from sandstorms from outside the country while being blamed as a sand source to northeast Asia. The other three major sources are in Africa, North America and Australia.

The land suffering from desertification has been decreasing by 7,585 square kilometres annually in China, and the area of sandy land has also been falling by 1,284 square kilometres a year.

The shrinkage (收缩) forms a clear contrast to the fact that the land suffering from desertification and sandy feature was added by 10,400 square kilometres and 3,436 square kilometres late last century, respectively.

Currently, the desertification land in China makes up 2.64 million square kilometres, accounting for 27.46 percent of the nation's land, and its sandy land totals 1.74 million square kilometres, accounting for 18.1 percent of the country's total.

8.What does the underlined word "decreasing" mean in Paragraph 4?

A.Going down. B.Going up.

C.Coming from. D.Taking up.

9.Where do most of the sandstorms in China come from?

A.The northwestern Chinese regions.

B.The northern Chinese regions.

C.The western part of China.

D.Foreign countries.

10.Which of the following is believed to be the sand source to northeast Asia?

A.Mongolia. B.Africa.

C.China. D.Australia.

11.What can we infer from this passage?

A.The land in China suffering from desertification has been increasing greatly.

B.China has made achievements in its own desertification control.

C.The desertification land makes up nearly half of China's territory.

D.Little progress has been made in controlling desertification in China.

Called "the man who shaped America" and "the father of modern industrial design", Raymond Loewy must be one of the most influential designers of all time. He revolutionized the industry, working as an adviser for more than 200 companies and creating designs for everything from packaging to refrigerators, from cars to the insides of spaceships.

Loewy's designs all had one thing in common. They were shaped by the MAYA principle — Most Advanced Yet Acceptable. His idea was that people will not accept solutions to design problems if the solutions are too different from current designs.

Loewy started his career in industrial design in 1929 by redesigning a copying machine for the British manufacturer, Sigmund Gestetner. The 28yearold designer completed the task in three days and the design of the machine lasted for the next 40 years.

The Gestetner copying machine was the beginning of many designs which used streamlining (流线型). He described this as "beauty through function and simplification". He spent the next 50 years streamlining everything from postage stamps and company logos (商标) to the insides of stores. The famous Greyhound bus and Studebaker car show his use of streamlining in action.

He is perhaps most famous for his redesign of the Lucky Strike packaging. In 1940, the President of the Lucky Strike Manufacturing Company, George Washington Hill, bet Loewy $50,000 that he could not improve the appearance of the green and red Lucky Strike packets. Loewy accepted the challenge. He changed the background of the packet from green to white. Then he put the red lucky strike target on both sides of the packet. This made it more eyecatching and greatly increased sales. It is now recognized as a design classic.

Loewy's logo design aimed at "visual retention (视觉保持)". He wanted to make sure that anyone who saw the logo, even for a short while, would never forget it. He designed many highly visible logos for famous companies such as Shell Oil, Exxon, Greyhound and Nabisco.

By the mid 20th century, his industrial design firm was so famous that he could say "the average person, leading a normal life ... is bound to be in daily contact with some of the things, services or structures" designed by his firm.

12.Loewy's biggest influence was in ________.

A.completely changing the design industry

B.successfully shaping Americans' taste

C.changing people's idea about design

D.building a professional design team

13.Loewy's designs were based on the idea of ________.

A.speeding up the design process

B.providing completely different designs

C.providing most immediately recognizable designs

D.offering original but not revolutionary answers to problems

14.Loewy first used streamlining ________.

A.in his redesign of the Lucky Strike packaging

B.when he designed a company logo for the Gestetner

C.when he redesigned a copying machine for Gestetner

D.in his design for the Greyhound bus and Studebaker car

15.What can we infer from the last paragraph?

A.Loewy provided service to ordinary people.

B.Loewy's designs were famous and influential.

C.Loewy's design firms existed all over the world.

D.Loewy was welcomed and respected by the public.

Dear Tom,

Learning that you are interested in Chinese folk art, especially the weaving art, I'm glad to tell you something about it.

The weaving art, dating back to over 1,000 years, is one of the Chinese native arts passed down by craftsmen from one generation to the next. Since the weaving art is popular among common people, the weaving materials are mainly from nature. Bamboos, silk threads, or some other vine plants are usually used to make chairs, pack baskets, curtains, baskets, decorations and so on.

Chinese knotting is generally regarded as one of the most outstanding decorations of the weaving art. The reason is that it's not only a beautiful decoration with various shapes, it also symbolizes good luck and prosperity.

Here is a book on Chinese weaving art for you. I hope the book can help you know more about it.

Yours truly,

Li Hua
